"you're so strict about your weight so did you know [x] that you eat has more calories than [y]? you don't show it yet but my coworker gained from it" and instantly, cue extreme panic and there goes that safe food straight out the window.

i guess this was more of a vent post but. (how) do you deal with triggering comments from people who don't know about your ED? just smiling through it while screaming internally or are there any ways to cope with them

Know that you know A LOT MORE than others because of your eating disorder, smile graciously and pretend you are in the acting role of your life - "thank you so much for telling me this". This will unnerve them. Turn it into a game where you can get them to back down and then just move on. You know what you are doing as I'm fairly certain you will have thought about what is safe for you.

thank you so much for saying this, this calmed me down a lot

rationally i know it wouldn't make me gain because i'm very aware of my calories so i don't know why i freaked out so much

yep. just as the first comment said- were the only ones that truly know. so unless youre open to them knowing why this upsets you, best to just shrug it off.
however, ive always been annoyed by people who comment abt other peoples appearances, may it be abt their clothes, hair etc etc. i just stare at them when that happens and theyd be confused af. its fun to do haha

I just look at people and laugh. Of course i get triggered but the same people saying that are the same people cooking with full fat, full calorie, full disgusting- no regard for how they are making their food .

            I also struggle with that.
I avoided dairy for a year then one person asked why- since it's not caloric at all and has many health benefits and I'm not allergic. Now I'm drinking yoghurt for every breakfast and dinner...

Opposite with bananas- my friend commented saying it has too much cal for a fruit. Now i can't make myself eat a whole banana...

I could eat only toast few months ago,now i eat only regular bread since "toast has more added sugar"...

            It's fucking annoying...

Ugh one of my biggest pet peeves is people commenting on what others eat, especially if they’re talking about me! My husband’s family is like this - if I have a high volume, low cal salad in front of them, they’ll say shit like “oh you like big plates don’t you!” Or “I can’t believe you’re going to eat all that, how do you stay so slim!”. Not to mention their general fat phobia. And I’m pretty sure my MIL has as ED too based on how she will eat literally one bite of something and spend the rest of the meal making a HUGE fuss about how she is sooooo full and constantly asking others to finish her food for her. Ugh!!! Thankfully they live on the other side of the country so I cope by remembering that I only have to deal with these comments from them twice a year max, and my husband is totally aware of how I feel about these comments and how they trigger my ED, and validates my feelings. He is also a good listener and lets me vent when we are back in the safety of our own home. In the moment though, when I get those comments, I just try my best to laugh it off and say I’m really active and if they push on the issue then my husband might step in and change the topic.

Another story - my mentor at my old job was openly disordered about her eating and whenever there were treats at a meeting, she’d make comments like “I’d rather barf than eat that” or “ew that’s disgusting” if offered a brownie or something. Not sure why it was so triggering, maybe because she’s so open about it, but it always made me feel weird.
