things i've made/tried:
- peanut butter & pickle sandwich (made 3/31/22)
sooo unfortunately this was not *as* good as the toast version. idk it just didn't hit, but i also don't hate it?
- toast with peanut butter & pickles (made 3/29/22)
love everything about this combo. the salty flavors and the slight crunch of the pickle and toast go so well with the creamy peanut butter. i think i would add more pb to my serving next time though that's the only thing...like have a thick layer of pb and pickle slices galore. i imagine this as a sandwich that wasn't toasted would taste quite good too, but i'm not sure--will have to try it i guess!
- maple-tahini mylk (made 3/24/22)
okay so it was mostly sad and watery bc i was having a low cal/high volume food day but honestly it was still pretty good and i would have it again. it had a 10/10 aftertaste tbqh. i made it just with the hand mixer today but i bet with the proper blender (it was dirty again today) it would taste rly fkn good and frothy *–*
edit 3/29/22: tahini mylk (w/o maple syrup but still) has become kind of a staple food for me lowkey over the past five ish days!? i love it so much. i just blend 1 tbsp tahini with 2.5c water and it's so freaking good to me i love it. i even added some blended collard greens to the mylk one time yum yum
- carob hot "chocolate" with marshmallows (made 3/21/22)
1/10. it was clumpy and thick and wasn't sweet enough. i don't even want to attempt it again and waste my carob squares lol. also my failed attempt at making this literally triggered a binge so that's suuuuper fun for me
would've rated it lower but the tahini milk i made for the recipe seemed promising at least, so i want to use that as an idea to bounce off on and try making tahini-maple milk at some point before my tahini jar runs out.
- grilled pb&garlic sandwich (tried 3/19/22)
i was inspired to try out this combo after seeing a photo of it online, and i was intrigued the moment i read it! it turned out to be quite nice actually. i used ezekiel bread, 1 tsp peanut butter, 1/2 tsp olive oil for pan-frying, and 2 cloves of garlic. i boiled the garlic until it was soft (20 min, but i bet that time could be shortened if you soaked it in hot water earlier!) and mashed it into one half of the bread, and spread your average store brand pb on the other. toasted it until it was crispy and yum! 6/10? 5/10? not mind-bogglingly good, but i would have it again. anything toasted is just absolutely lovely, let's be honest.
my only complaint is that it felt like the garlic overpowered the peanut butter — which makes sense. so if i have this another time, i'd likely use 1/2 tbsp peanut butter instead of just the 1 tsp.
- carob s'mores (made tue 3/15/22)
made these properly today by roasting the dandies over the stovetop burner and i really liked it!! my only complaint is that the carob pieces were a little cold and sad when i put everything together and my marshmallow was slightly burnt, but overall flavor wise it was quite nice. i mean, the last time i had s'mores must've been some time in early middle school pre-veganism!! crazy crazy.
definitely will be making again. and hopefully i try making graham crackers of my own too, i used digestives which was nice and all but i think trying a hand at homemade proper graham crackers would make this taste even better!
- fluffernutter sandwich (made sun 3/13/22)technically fluffernutters are supposed to be made with white bread but we didn't have any. so i just used sesame ezekiel bread.
the texture combination of the two spreads was a bit meh...the creaminess of the peanut butter & the airiness of the marshmallow fluff didn't really go all that great together. perhaps if i had mixed the two into one homogenous marsh-pb, then it would've been better?
taste-wise it was a solid 6/10. i mean it's sugar and fat, you can't really go wrong with that formula.tbh texture was a bit meh, the creaminess of the pb & the airiness of the marshmallow fluff didn't rly go well together imo...but taste was a solid 6/10. i mean it's sugar and fat, you can't really go wrong
btw, to make the marshmallow fluff, i used Dandies vegan marshmallows, ripped them into bits and microwaved them with a small amount of water until they dissolved. then, i added a pinch of cream of tartar and whisked it until it made a fluffy creme-type spread. mine was a little slimy but i think that's because i added too much cream of tartar lol.
- canned beans with potato chips (tried thu 3/10/22)
i loved this quick and easy combo, will probably have it again if i'm ever in need of a depression meal!! i think the crunch from the chips + the creaminess of the beans really works well together. and my canned beans were chili flavored so that made it even more fun i also liked using the chips as a scoop for the beans. all around pretty solid...btw, i had the beans cold. not sure how this would've been had they been warmed up — perhaps another food idea to try at some point or another?
- potato chips with carob squares — melted and whole (tried tue 3/8/22)
this combination was underwhelming with the chips and unmelted carob squares. it just felt like eating a really confused wafer cookie that was trying too hard to be a Kavici Choco Sphere or something. also, it felt like the sweetness of the squares was totally overpowering the subtle sea salt of the potato chips and idk it just didn't have a ton of flavor
HOWEVER. when the carob was melted!? o.m.g. it was totally elevated. idk how, but it made perfect sense together. i wouldn't say it was like wowow so incredible everyone try this now, but it was definitely a step up from your average joe potato chip.
- vegan vanilla ice cream with olive oil and salt (tried tue 2/21/22)
i get why this combo is a thing! it makes the ice cream feel suuuper velvety in your mouth.
couldn't really taste the salt, but the subtle olive flavor was actually quite nice! would recommend
