Do You Find E.D Jokes in Movies/ T.V Offensive?
#1
Posted 06 September 2021 - 03:30 PM
eg. Scream Queens
eg. Wild Child
eg. The Hot Chicks
(There is a lot more)
These movies and t.v show I've listed suggest that e.d is funny when referencing females with ego issues. Quite honestly, I find it to be offensive that the writers see it as not a serious problem, especially for those who do have an eating disorder.
Many of the time, e.g people don't use their disorder as a leverage and boast about it in social platforms, though some might, but it's rare; however, the biggest insight shown into the lives and personality of those who have it, are in the rare.

Not at all, I always use humor as a coping mechanism so I just find it funny as hell. Its not like it makes a difference to my personal life. I do understand the offense some see, however. But I'm just not offended personally by things.

I'm not usually offended/hurt but I do find those jokes to be boring/tasteless as they're never really funny to me. I just don't see the point in saying something so bland, especially when it borders on simply making fun of sick people which is more mean that it's worth. same goes for similar jokes about any other mental illness too. there are ways to comment on illnesses while making it actually funny and minimally hurtful but the ones in the given examples are not it lol

Most of the time I hardly even pay attention to them. I might chuckle, but besides that I'm rather 'eh' about it

Many are cliche and used ALL the time. Those aren't funny, just boring. If it's hinted at or referenced in a way that isn't obvious, those are the best.
Heather's "Bulimia is SO 87" was a funny example for me. It mocks that people treat ED behaviors as fads/phases when we know it's not a fad. The full joke goes over most people's heads, but it has a deeper layer that I like.

And sometimes they make me a bit mad because I feel it stigmatizes a serious disorder.
For example, I love Its Always Sunny but when they make jokes on EDs or CSA I die a bit inside because it’s like “they’re laughing at YOU and your pathetic life, TinyCray!”. But I still watch the show and enjoy it <3

For some reason, the gifs you attached I feel fine with.
When I clicked I was thinking more along the lines of how Family Guy joke about EDs. I find their ED jokes absolutely horrible, and not funny at all. Like they're just trying so hard to be dark and edgy to offend people.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the ones in the gifs are between women - either a "bitchy character" we're not meant to like, or as a kind of "in joke" between women who all get where they're coming from.
The ones in Family Guy are basically just "let's all just take a moment to laugh at the expense of mentally ill people".

Correct however I use humor to cope with my own issues so I laugh at jokes
Not saying that you will use these movies/shows written by someone else trying to make a buck with an ed joke will use said jokes to cope with your own issues but I do and I think its fine
I do acknowledge that they're not ed sufferers most times trying to convey a message but to me I don't get offended by it is all
ALSO in the original message I said "I use humor as a coping mechanism", which means its a coping mechanism for myself.

how is it hypocritical for them to be offended by something? the only issue op mentioned is jokes referring to eds so i’m confused. it would be ridiculous if everyone had the exact same opinion.Nope! I don’t even watch much tv and I’ve never seen the shows you’ve mentioned. But still like?? Everything and everyone is made fun of. i didn't think they were funny until i searched the actual clip of them. Sure I guess they make me uncomfortable but thats the purpose. Cheap humor, but ya know... its all futile

I don't usually find it offensive, just either funny or unfunny. I only really get uncomfortable if someone who knows about my ED is watching the show/movie with me. It's kind of like watching a sex scene with your parents and I just don't know how to react.

omg 30 Rock is the worst offender. she's always stuffing her face and talking about food and it is so "look at us (writers) we're breaking a stereotype so relatable" BUT SHE'S FUCKING SKINNY so it's basically meaningless in its whole ooh shaking up portrayals of women. like eating is good, girls who eat a lot are cool, but getting fat is still bad even if it's literally impossible to pig out and not exercise and stay skinny. and yeah probably the biggest *not like other girls* on tv.No, but I do get offended when there's this main character who's ~not like other girls™~ and she says stuff like "Oh, I'm so hungry I could eat 10 burgers" or agrees to a date at a restaurant, only for her love interest to make remarks such as "Omg I'm so glad you're not one of those girls that starves herself" or "Omg finally a girl who eats".
